Studio Space

Located adjacent to our gallery is an artist studio that provides rent-free project space and financial support for two artists-in-residence annually.

About the Residency

The New City Artist-in-Residence program provides a local artist with a 5 month studio space grant and a $1,000 stipend. Each residency concludes with an exhibition or performance to present work created during the residency.

The New City Arts Research Residency is supported by the studio space adjacent to Welcome Gallery and aims to support artists and creatives of all disciplines with practices based in research (i.e., writers, curators, art historians, designers, filmmakers, etc.). The residency is meant to be a celebration of all the ways research informs artistic practices – the questioning, experimenting, reflecting, archiving, and observing that leads artists to new discoveries and ways of knowing.

  • The studio is approximately 9'x16' with a pocket door for privacy, wall space for displaying works in progress, large studio table that adjusts to accommodate seated or standing height, ergonomic studio chair, high-speed fiber internet provided by Ting, a multi-function printer, and a shared kitchen and bathroom. It’s located adjacent to New City Arts’ Welcome Gallery at 114 3rd St. NE, Charlottesville, VA 22902.

  • Resident artists are selected through an open call and artist-led community review panel. Applications for the New City Arts Research Residency are currently closed.

  • The residency is open to artists of all disciplines (visual artists, writers, musicians, dancers, and filmmakers). Resident artists must live in the Charlottesville area during the residency program. Preference is given to applicants with specific project goals for the residency period, which is approximately 5 months.

    Please note that the studio space does not have a working window and is in a public space. For this reason, we do not recommend this residency for artists working with materials that produce fumes requiring a well-ventilated space.

    Applications are currently closed.

  • Given that the core of our mission is to foster engagement with the arts in Charlottesville, VA, we ask that resident artists

    • spend a minimum of 15 hours a week in the studio;

    • lead one small event during the Residency and one culminating event sharing their work with the public;

    • be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 (including a booster shot, if eligible) by the start of their Residency date.

    Candidates must live in the Charlottesville area (including the city of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson) during the residency program.
